An evening ritual is a sequence, not a product. Cleanse, then exfoliate, then put something back: that order is why Rituals sells its relaxation collections as sets rather than as three unrelated bottles, and it is why a set tends to work better than the same three things bought separately over a year. The Dutch house builds each collection around one scent and one mood. For the end of a day, the two worth knowing are Jing and Karma.

Start With Jing

The Jing Box Ritual relaxation set is the calm one. It holds three pieces, a foaming shower gel, a salt scrub and a body cream, built around lotus and jujube, and the scrub carries magnesium salt crystals that give it more bite than a sugar scrub. Use them in that order. Cleanse first, work the scrub in circular motions second, then massage the cream into skin that is still damp, so it holds the water in rather than sitting on top of dry skin. The sequence is short. What makes it work is the order, not the time it takes.

Karma is the brighter alternative and follows the same three-step logic. The Ritual of Karma Body Care Set is again a shower gel, a scrub and a body cream, but the scent is lotus and white tea, which reads fresher and lighter and does not settle a room the way Jing does. Choose Jing when the evening is meant to end. Choose Karma when it is not, or when the set is a gift and you do not know someone's taste well enough to commit them to something heavier.

If You Would Rather Build It Yourself

The sets are a starting point rather than a rule, and two pieces are worth swapping in. The Ritual of Sakura Shower Oil is the better first step if your skin is dry: it turns from an oil into a creamy lather on wet skin, with sweet almond, canola and castor oils, and it leaves far less tightness afterwards than a foaming gel does.

Follow it with Ayurvedic Nourishing Body Oil, which is the last step rather than the first. Two or three drops warmed between the palms and pressed onto damp skin is the whole method; the blend of sweet almond, moringa and coconut oils has enough weight for elbows and knees in winter and still absorbs without a greasy finish. An oil applied straight after a shower does more than a cream applied an hour later, because the skin is still holding water.

The Step Most People Leave Out

Scent in the room does more for an evening than scent on the skin, and it is the part that gets skipped. Rituals' Private Collection Fragrance Sticks is a 450 ml reed diffuser in a sculptural glass bottle: citrus and berries at the opening, peony and lily of the valley at the heart, sandalwood underneath. The house states it scents a room for up to five months. Stand it where you will actually be sitting rather than where a guest would see it, and turn the sticks now and then to refresh it.

The Order That Matters

  • Scent the room first, so it has time to fill while you are in the shower.
  • Cleanse with an oil rather than a gel if your skin is dry.
  • Exfoliate second, in circular motions, and no more than two or three times a week.
  • Moisturise on damp skin, never on dry. The water is half of the result.

None of this is complicated, which is the argument for it. An evening ritual is three things you already half do, put in the right order and given one scent to hold them together.
