A reed diffuser scents a room by capillary action. Rattan reeds stand in a bottle of fragrance oil, draw it up their length and let it evaporate into the air. There is no flame, no wax and nothing to switch on, which is why it is the one home scent you can put in a hallway, a bathroom or a bedroom and then forget about. Choosing one is really three decisions: the character of the scent, where the bottle stands, and how often you turn the reeds.

How a Reed Diffuser Works

The rattan is the mechanism. Each reed is porous along its length, so it lifts oil out of the bottle and presents a far larger surface to the room than the neck of the bottle could on its own. Evaporation does the rest. That gives a diffuser its two defining qualities. It is steady, because nothing is being heated or burned, and it is slow, because the rate is set by the reeds rather than by you. Give a new bottle a day before you judge it: the reeds have to saturate before the scent reaches the room, and a diffuser dismissed after an hour has not started yet.

Which Character Suits Which Room

Two characters cover most of a house. Marine Floral Reed Diffuser is the fresh one: saline top notes over a soft floral heart, in a 95 ml clear glass vessel with rattan reeds. Eco Happy, the Danish house that makes it, describes it as suited to medium rooms, and that is about right. It reads as clean air rather than as fragrance, which is what you want in a bathroom, or in a hallway where people arrive and take their coats off.

Apricot & Orange Blossom Reed Diffuser is the warmer one, and it is the better choice where a room has a job to do. Apricot and orange peel oils give the lift, a rose petal accord sits underneath, and the vessel is the same 95 ml refillable glass. Citrus opens a room and a floral heart holds it, so this is the one for a kitchen or a living room, where the scent has to survive cooking and company rather than sit in still air.

If you want a diffuser that is also an object, Rituals' Private Collection Fragrance Sticks is the larger format: 450 ml in a sculptural glass bottle, with citrus and berries at the opening, peony and lily of the valley at the heart and sandalwood underneath. Rituals states it scents a room for up to five months, which is the return for the size. Put it where the shape can be seen, because half of what you are choosing is the silhouette on the shelf.

Where to Stand It

  • On a stable surface, upright, away from direct sunlight and away from heat. Both change the oil and shorten the life of the bottle.
  • Out of a draught. A diffuser in a doorway gives its scent to the corridor instead of filling the room.
  • Out of reach of children and pets, and off anything you would mind marking. Wipe a spill straight away rather than letting it sit.
  • Not beside where you eat. Room fragrance and food argue with each other, and the food loses.

Getting the Strength Right

The reeds are the volume control. Use the full set in a large or open room, and take two or three out for a small bathroom or a bedroom, where a whole bundle can be more than you want to sleep beside. You can always put them back. Turning the reeds refreshes the scent by bringing the saturated ends up into the air, and Eco Happy asks for that every fortnight on both of the bottles above. A diffuser you turn on a schedule stays far more consistent than one you turn when you notice it has faded, so give it a day of the week and leave it there.

When to Replace It

A reed diffuser ends in one of two ways. Either the bottle empties, or the reeds clog and stop lifting. If the level has dropped and the scent has gone with it, replace the bottle. If there is oil left and the scent has faded anyway, replace the reeds first, because saturated reeds cannot take up any more. The Eco Happy bottles are refillable, which makes the second the smaller job of the two.

Scent is the part of a room you notice last and remember first. A diffuser is the least demanding way to get it right: choose the character, stand it where the air moves, and turn the reeds on a Sunday.
